At Mapoux Professional Services, we’re committed to helping our clients take confident steps toward their American dream. One of the most important milestones for immigrants in the United States is becoming a U.S. citizen. Whether you're just starting your journey or preparing to submit your Form N‑400, here’s what you need to know about the naturalization process in 2025, including recent updates and essential reminders.
✅ Who Is Eligible to Apply for U.S. Citizenship?
To apply for citizenship through naturalization, you must meet these general requirements:
Be at least 18 years old
Have held a green card (permanent resident status) for:
5 years, or
3 years if married to a U.S. citizen
Have continuous residence in the U.S. for the required period
Have been physically present in the U.S. for at least 30 months out of the last 5 years
Show good moral character
Pass English language and U.S. civics tests
Be willing to take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States
How the Process Works
Prepare & File Form N-400
You can file online or by mail. Be sure to use the current version of the form and submit the correct filing fee.
➤ New fees take effect in July 2025 due to changes under H.R. 1
Attend Biometrics Appointment
USCIS will schedule fingerprinting and identity verification after receiving your application.
Attend Interview & Take Tests
You'll meet with a USCIS officer to review your application and take the English and civics test (unless you're eligible for a waiver).
Take the Oath
If approved, you’ll be scheduled for a naturalization ceremony, where you’ll take the Oath of Allegiance and officially become a U.S. citizen!
🆕 What’s New in 2025?
💵 Filing Fee Changes
Starting July 22, 2025, USCIS will begin enforcing new fee structures for immigration forms, including the N‑400. Be sure to check uscis.gov for the latest fee before filing.
🔎 Social Media Disclosure Proposal
USCIS has proposed collecting applicants’ social media handles during the naturalization and green card processes. While not yet final, this could become part of background screenings in the future. Be mindful of your public online activity.
📆 Faster Processing Times
USCIS reports that naturalization processing in 2025 is moving faster than in recent years—some applicants are being scheduled for interviews in as little as 4–6 months, depending on location.
📚 How to Prepare
Study the civics test questions using USCIS tools and apps
Practice English reading, writing, and speaking skills
Review your green card history, travel dates, and tax records
Gather supporting documents before submitting your application
Stay informed about deadlines, fee changes, and interview dates
💡 Helpful Tip from Mapoux:
If you're eligible, file as early as possible to avoid delays or miss the window for any upcoming fee increases. If you have a complex case or are unsure about the process, document preparation services like ours can help you submit a complete and accurate application.
